the Last Best Day of the Year…
The thing about the “Last Best Day of the Year (Summer)” is that you never know just exactly what day it is until it is over and gone… Summer seemed to come to an early end in the Valley of the Two Wallas. Early in September, the daily high temperatures were in the 60′s but then they rose into the 80′s at the end of the month.
Sunday we got some rain and the high temperature dropped back into the 60′s. Monday started off cloudy but by afternoon the sun peaked out and burned off the overcast and the temperature rose to 65.
Since Shady Lawn is not open for business on Mondays, I went home in mid-afternoon. I was going to wheel our reclining lawn chair out into the sun but then I realized that I didn’t have to. The angle of the October sun is so low in the sky that I could just lie under the patio roof and still be in the sun…
So I found myself laying in the sun, dangling between a sun induced drowsiness and a brisk freshness when a light breeze would push clouds in front of the sun – It was kind of like hanging onto summer while slipping into fall…
At this time of year every day could be “the Last Best Day of the Year” and so you enjoy it for what it is and I enjoyed the hour in the lawn chair…
